Summer Term 2021 – Year 1 Curriculum Newsletter 


Welcome to a sunny Summer Term in Year 1. 



This term in English we will focus on our topic of ‘Land and Sea’. We will be focusing on non-fiction writing, looking at features of non-fiction texts and writing our own facts about many amazing under sea creatures. We will also learn about some famous pirates and enjoy stories about their swashbuckling adventures!   



In Maths we will continue to consolidate number facts (number bonds, doubles, counting in2s, 5s and 10s). Our learning will focus on multiplication (groups of), division, halves and quarters, position and direction, numbers to 100, time and money.  



In Science we will be observing seasonal changes and looking at the transition from spring to summer. We will learn about the structure of plants and trees and what they need to grow well. We will engage in a variety of activities including identifying common plants and trees in the garden and in the wild, sorting deciduous and evergreen leaves. Children will plant their own sunflower and observe it closely over the coming weeks by measuring and recording its growth.  



In IT we will create some animated stories by manipulating characters and backgrounds, using the app ‘Puppetpals’. We will also practise word processing skills, including typing, keyboard knowledge, editing and saving.  



Our Geography focus will be ‘Our Island of Jersey’. We will learn about the twelve parishes, important landmarks and compare urban and rural settings. We will learn to use simple compass directions to follow maps.  



Year 1 classes will be focusing on developing the quality with which they perform Athletics skills. They will take part in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities in order to develop their agility, balance and coordination. The children will also be further developing their games skills through taking part in a range of modified striking and fielding games. They will develop their throwing, catching and batting skills as well as learning how to work collaboratively as part of a team. 



The focus in music this term for Year 1 will be exploring instruments and symbols. Musical activities will include singing a variety of seasonal and topical songs using classroom instruments to accompany their singing. They will explore dynamics and tempo in music using movement and dance.  They will listen to the story “Treasure Island” and created music to accompany the story. They will also learn to sing the song “Imagination” from the Charanga music scheme and learn to play an accompaniment part using tuned percussion instruments.

In RE we will be learning about Judaism and the celebrations of Shabbat and Chanukah.  


Art / Design Technology 

In Art we will be looking at the natural world. We will be experimenting with a range of media, including clay and textiles 


Useful Information: 

We are hoping our visit to Mont Orgueil Castle will go ahead later this term – more details to follow.
