Welcome to a sunny Summer Term in Year 1.
This term in English we will focus on our topic of ‘Land and Sea’. We will be focusing on non-fiction writing, looking at features of non-fiction texts and writing our own facts about many amazing under sea creatures. We will also learn about some famous pirates and enjoy stories about their swashbuckling adventures!
In Maths we will continue to consolidate number facts (number bonds, doubles, counting in2s, 5s and 10s). Our learning will focus on multiplication (groups of), division, halves and quarters, position and direction, numbers to 100, time and money.
In Science we will be observing seasonal changes and looking at the transition from spring to summer. We will learn about the structure of plants and trees and what they need to grow well. We will engage in a variety of activities including identifying common plants and trees in the garden and in the wild, sorting deciduous and evergreen leaves. Children will plant their own sunflower and observe it closely over the coming weeks by measuring and recording its growth.
In IT we will create some animated stories by manipulating characters and backgrounds, using the app ‘Puppetpals’. We will also practise word processing skills, including typing, keyboard knowledge, editing and saving.
Our Geography focus will be ‘Our Island of Jersey’. We will learn about the twelve parishes, important landmarks and compare urban and rural settings. We will learn to use simple compass directions to follow maps.
Year 1 classes will be focusing on developing the quality with which they perform Athletics skills. They will take part in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities in order to develop their agility, balance and coordination.
