Summer Term 2021 – Reception Curriculum Newsletter 

 

Welcome to our final term in Reception! 

 

This term we will be including the themes of dinosaurs, Liberation Day, minibeasts and summer.   Some of our learning will be linked to our topics but wherever possible we will follow the children’s interests alongside our planned activities.   

 

In our Personal, Social and Emotional Development lessons we shall be learning about relationships; how our behaviour can affect others and how to be a good friend. We shall also be learning about how we grow and change and talk about the changes ahead as we prepare to move on to Year 1. 

 

In Communication, Language and Literacy we be encouraging children to follow several instructions and talk about their ideas and experiences, expressing themselves clearly with an awareness of the listener. In phonics ware consolidating Phase 3 of ‘Letters and Sounds’ and introducing Phase 4 which encourages children to read and write longer words using the sounds they know. Please keep reading at home every day whenever possible. Encouraging your child to use the taught letter formation at home will also support your child further. 

 

In Mathematics we will consolidate our number knowledge to 20 using our subitising skills and previous knowledge. We will solve simple problems including doubling, halving and sharing and begin to count in different amounts such as 2s, 5s and 10s. If you wish to find out more about subitising please follow the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KtifCNlYy4 

 

In PEthe children will be taking part in athletic activities which will include running, jumping and throwing along with basic movement skills. The children will learn about basic striking and fielding which will include developing skills such as catching, throwing, rolling and batting. We shall also focus on keeping ourselves safe and healthy.Mrs Scott’s class will be swimming this term.  

 

In Musicthis term, they will sing a variety of seasonal and topical songs using movement and percussion instruments to explore the music. They will continue to sing a variety of counting and action rhymes. They will learn songs linked to the class topics of “Dinosaurs and Mini Beasts.”  

The focus will be learning about dynamics through various activities and listening games exploring the louds and soft sounds in music. They will listen to the poem “Summer’s Hot” and create their own music to accompany this.  

 

Other Information 

On Forest School Fridays, children must wear a long-sleeved top and long trousers. If it is a hot day, they should have a long-sleeved top with them that can be worn during the session.  

 

Please also ensure that children have a water bottle in school every day. These bottles should have a sports cap, as this helps reduce spillages when they get knocked over.  

 

Please apply suncream to your child before school as they are often out for long periods of time regularly throughout the day. If you wish to provide your child with a roll-on suncream for them to top up their protection independently at lunchtime, please do. It must be named and used only for the named child. 

 

Please ensure your child has a named school sun hat. These can be bought from the PTA by completing a form on the school website. 

 

Please continue to share interests, achievements and learning from outside school with us on Seesaw, the children are always very proud to share their posts with their classmates.  

 

If someone different is picking up your child from school, including playdates, please ensure that you inform your child’s class teacher.
